A Celebration of Making at Black Swans Studio

Roots • Rhythms • Rituals is a celebration of the enduring traditions of textile making, bringing together local makers, sustainable materials and shared creative experiences.

Inspired by the seasonal rhythms of the landscape and the heritage of British textiles, the project explores how making connects us to place, community and wellbeing. Through weaving, stitching, lacemaking, spinning and natural dyeing, visitors are invited to slow down, discover traditional skills and contribute to collaborative artworks that grow throughout the event.

At its heart is the belief that making is more than creating an object—it is a ritual of care, creativity and connection. The repetitive rhythms of handcraft encourage mindfulness, while the sharing of skills strengthens communities and keeps traditional knowledge alive for future generations.

Working with local wool producers, textile artists and craftspeople, the project celebrates the journey of fibre from fleece to finished cloth, highlighting sustainable practices, local materials and the value of handmade processes.

Visitors can:

  • Take part in a large collaborative community weave using reclaimed textiles and yarns.

  • Add stitches and natural ephemera to a growing community textile banner.

  • Discover the journey from fleece to yarn through demonstrations and conversations with local producers.

  • Experience spinning, weaving and traditional textile techniques.

  • Meet artists and makers who are keeping heritage skills alive through contemporary practice.

  • This event is free to work with and encourage textile skills in the community.
